RESISTANCE OF ICE TO SHIP MOVEMENT
SOPROTIVLENIYE LDA DVIZHENIYU SUDNA
Modern methods of calculating the resistance of ice to ship movement are presented. Generalized results of theoretical experimental work in this area are given. Problems of modeling ship movement in various types of ice are examined, and the methodology and technology of carrying out tests with ship models in an experimental ice basin are covered. The interrelationship between the main characteristics of a ship and ice parameters is examined, and practical methods of calculating a ships speed in ice taking into account the natural characteristics of the ice cover, the strength of the ships hull, and the size of its power plant are given. The methods of calculating ice resistance are original and have been developed by the authors over a period of years on the basis of theoretical and experimental research carried out under natural conditions and in experimental ice basins. Brief data are also presented on icebreakers, transport ships for polar navigation and their ice-breaking capacity, and also data on sea ice, its classification, and its physical and mechanical properties. Recommendations are given for designing the lines of ship hulls for polar navigation for selecting the main dimensions, and for determining the size of the power plant. For the first time, a series of complex questions connected with ship navigation in various types of ice are systematically answered permitting basic decisions to be made on the proper shape of icebreaker and polar ship hulls. The monograph is intended for engineers and technicians in the ship building industry.
