A Review of Pedestrian Walking Speeds and Time Needed to Cross the Road
There is evidence that some pedestrians who use signal-controlled crossings require a longer time to cross than the clearance period allows. Specifically the older population may have slower walking speeds. This report looks at the time needed by pedestrians to cross a road and the current method of calculating crossing time. A literature review was conducted focusing on walking speeds and insufficient crossing time. The report also models the effects of increasing pedestrian clearance periods on traffic flow and pedestrian delay.
