HEAVY DUTY LONG CONTINUOUS FLEXIBLE PIPE WITH BUILT-IN ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS FOR OFFSHORE GATHERING LINES AND OTHER APPLICATIONS
As motivation for considering alternate approaches to the problem of laying underwater pipelines, the author discusses the problems associated with handling and installation of metal pipes with respect to currently available fabrication and installation procedures. The alternate suggested by the author is the use of flexible hose pipes in long runs which can be quickly laid by straight forward unreeling from the surface. The only requirement is for the flexible pipe to possess mechanical properties, and in particular, tensile strength, compatible with the strain associated with these laying methods and which depends primarily on the depth and, to a lesser degree on the laying speed. Efforts initiated by the Institute Francais du Petrole are being directed toward overcoming manufacturing limitations and to provide minimum mechanical requirements for larger diameter flexible pipes. The development of this concept involves pipe composed of an inner plastic or rubber tube, an interlocked metal spiral or an extruded steel wire core, wrapped over with an armour of wire, cable or steel strapping or even woven fabric. Advantages, including economic advantages to be realized, and potential fields of application, are examined.
