AN ENGINEERING PROGRAM TO IMPROVE THE RELIABILITY OF DEEP SEA MOORINGS

The authors discuss the scope and results of a comprehensive engineering programme wherein the objective is to improve the reliability and performance of single point, taut moored buoys using a composite mooring consisting of wire and synthetic ropes. Measurements of the forcing functions and the system response made at sea both during and after launch are reviewed. The findings of a mooring line components testing and evaluation programme are presented for both at-sea and laboratory conditions. Special instrumentation used to measure, record and telemeter engineering data from these moorings is discussed.
