TECHNOLOGY AND ECONOMICS OF LARGE-SCALE AUTOMATION OF SEAGOING VESSELS
TEKHNIKA I EKONOMIKA KOMPLEKSNOY AVTOMATIZATSII MORSKIKH SUDOV
This book, which is intended for a wide circle of designers, shipbuilders, mechanical engineers, and ship operators, deals with many aspects of the question of large-scale automation of seagoing vessels, such as the necessity for automating naval transport vessels, the need for the scientific organization of the crews work, and the prerequisites for introducing automation. The hierarchical structure of navigation and control systems, and the principles of constructing central control posts are discussed, taking into account the requirements of engineering psychology. Moreover, methods of determining the economic effectiveness of automation (i.e., tests, computations, comparative calculations) are discussed. In its examination of automated navigation, the book discusses the automation of such operations as the reception and processing of navigational information, the selection of an optional course for sailing a ship, the automation control of a ships movement, and the resolution of vessel divergence problems. The automation of shipboard diesel and steam turbine power plants is explained, an analysis of foreign experimentation is given, and some of the most important automatic systems are also examined. The role of the digital computer as a component part of automation on board a vessel is discussed, as well as computer installation procedures, parameters, and prerequisites. Recommendations are made as to the organization, automation, and mechanization of deck work and loading operations, existing methods of determining staff strength and regulations for crew qualifications in the navy, coast guard, and shore installations are discussed.
