Google’s Driverless Cars Run into Problem: Cars with Drivers

This article updates readers on driverless cars and the newly-discovered issue of integrating the “correct” style of autonomous vehicles with the messy world of live human drivers. Focusing on Google’s driverless cars, the authors note that the cars regularly perform quick, evasive maneuvers or exercise caution in ways that, while correct, may be more cautious than the other vehicles on the road. The article discusses lane departure technology, auditory warning systems in vehicles, adaptive cruise control, teaching autonomous vehicles to be more confident, coping with poorly-parked vehicles, vehicle behavior at signalized intersections, and current testing at Google designed to smooth out the relationship between the car’s software and the human drivers. A final section consider the positive impact of autonomous vehicles and other driver assistance strategies to help when drivers are distracted by cell phones and other in-car technology. The article includes a short video (2.5 minutes) that shows the Google self-driving car.
