DURABILITY OF D-SIZE SEALED NICKEL-CADMIUM CELLS

D-size sealed nickel-cadmium cells for use in portable electric lamps were investigated on their life performances. The test uas carried out by varying the depth of discharge in three steps for 63 cells taken out of thousands of the cells. The durability of the tested cells was more than 5,600 cycles when the depth of discharge was one-third of the nominal capacity. But it varied from 2,400 to more than 3,200 cycles when the depth of discharge was two-thirds. On the other hand, it was much shorter than this at the cycling of charge and full-discharge. The reason why the test cells deteriorated with repeated cycles of charge and discharge will be attributed to the lowering in their retention of charge.
