Micro-Simulation Modelling of Tram System: A Case Study in the UK Urban Context

This paper is intended to start with a brief background on the development of the micro-simulation model and the scheme that will be used as the case study. It will then describe the operation of the existing tram system and urban network and outline why the proposed extension to it requires detailed modelling to demonstrate that the scheme is operable by developing a working timetable. The paper will describe how the existing tram system operation and interface with Vehicle Actuated (VA) traffic signals has been reviewed. The paper will then show how this operation was modelled in VISSIM using VisVAP and Python scripting. It will then illustrate how diagnostic tools were also developed in Python to analyse how the traffic signal controller operates in reaction to tram initiation and show how the control logic was calibrated to optimise the operation of the tram system. The paper will describe the proposed tram extension and the development of a traffic signal strategy to interface with the tram signal strategy. The paper will then describe how the detailed operation of the scheme was modelled in VISSIM with Python diagnostic tools providing analysis of how the tram and traffic systems operate together. The iterative feedback process between the Tram Operation Model (using OpenTrack software), which will be used to generate/ test timetables, and VISSIM, which will feedback detailed delay and operational information, will be outlined. Finally, the paper will describe how the above modelling process has been followed assuming that fixed time method of control is employed at signal junctions affected by the proposed extension.
