NEW TASKS OF ELECTRIC TRACTION OF THE GERMAN FEDERAL RAILWAY

The technical, operating and economic expectations from electric traction entertained in the early days of the change in traction mode have been fulfilled. Having taken over about three-quarters of the gross tonne kilometrage on the network of the German Federal Railway, electric traction is now confronted with new tasks to cater for a not insignificantly modified operating programme. These new tasks have arisen from the operation of urban and suburban railways ("S-Bahnen") in city regions and from hauling heavy trains at significantly increased speeds. A further increase in the capacity of vehicles and fixed installations is called for. The new concepts of electric motive power units are in keeping with the more exacting requirements. They are distinguished by remarkable technical solutions. The fixed installations for electric traction are continually adapted to the increasing energy and power requirements in such a way that safety and reliability of power supply remain ensured. The success of all the efforts in creating an even better railway will largely depend on how quickly and how effectively the infrastructure of the partly outdated railway network can be generally improved.
