Mate stands for Motors for Additional Tractive Effort. Double-ended Mate described is sandwiched between pair of U36 units; motors are paired between trucks to minimize wheel slip. The 4-axle Mate is similar to the locomotives with which it operates except that all items above the platform are replaced by ballast, steel and auxiliaries. The Mate receives power for its four traction motors from adjacent locomotives in the consist.
