ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NOISE PROTECTION SCREENS
The effectiveness of noise protection screens is discussed in view of their projected uses on board ships. Noise attenuation due to such a screen may be determined as a function of the room constant, the total square surface area of surfaces surrounding the room, the mean coefficient of sound absorption in the room, usually determined by the reverberation method, and the distance from the sound source to the given point in meters. A series of experiments was conducted with loudspeakers in a room of a specified size, determining the sound level at given points with and without a sound screen. Effectiveness of the screen depends on the size of the room and location of the screen relative to the noise source. Use of the screen in large rooms may reduce the noise level by 2--7 db, depending on sound absorption, location of the screen, and other parameters. The screen is not effective if there is a second noise source behind it, close to the original source in intensity. Effectiveness may be increased by placing the screen in front of a recess, or substantially decreased by the presence of slits and apertures in the screen.
