LONGITUDINAL OSCILLATIONS ON TRAINS

LANGSSCHWINGUNGEN IM ZUGVERBAND

The mathematical study of train oscillations, attributing to the couplings linear elastic characteristics, does not provide results conforming to the reality, and does not explain the intensity of the efforts observed, which may attain three, or four, times the tractive effort. The authors provide details of the results of a study which assimilates the train to a continuous bar, with a deformation pressure, "S", which could be a function of deformation which is nil in the case of nil deformation, although non-linear, or even cyclic. They study the phenomenon with the help of the classical, partially derived, equation, covering the propagation of waves and they show, in this way, the existence of two different types of wave. They discuss their properties and interference in accordance with the accepted law, in order to explain the pressure in relation to the deformation, and they demonstrate, in this way, the possibility of the efforts which are four times the tractive effort observed.
