NEW TECHNIQUES FOR THE BORING OF TUNNELS THROUGH ROCK
TECHNIQUES NOUVELLES DANS L'EXECUTION DES GALERIES AU ROCHER
Three technical innovations were recently introduced on the underground sites in the French hydro-electric installations--pre-shearing by means of explosives, which consists in creating a prior crack along the contour, or profile, of the structure; immediate support by means of quick-setting sprayed concrete, in order to protect the rock against damage; and excavation without the use of explosives, by means of drilling machines which cut regular sections, and reduce supporting operations. In the case of each method, historical and technological details are shown, illustrated by means of examples of applications on the French Electricity Board's sites.
