TOFC/COFC GROWTH: THE END IS NOWHERE IN SIGHT

A survey of major TOFC/COFC operators turned up a number of facts and forecasts on where piggyback has been and where it is going: only a few roads had TOFC/COFC loadings; revenues increased by less than 10% in 1972, compared to 1971; most roads are finding increased interest in piggyback by motor carriers and users of private carriage; even with costs climbing and rates being held down, TOFC/COFC profitability was somewhat improved for almost half the roads surveyed, while about the same number checked in with an "about the same" report, and only a few said profitability has suffered; equipment supply is a continuing major worry, with the emphasis on flat car supply. If the potential of TOFC/COFC is to be realized, there is a wide range of problems that have to be overcome; equipment supply, development of better terminal facilities, maintenance of dependable service, control over rates and a need for better marketing for TOFC/COFC.
