TRUCK "HUNTING" INVESTIGATION

Truck and components wear problems prompted the Seaboard Coast Line to conduct a series of carefully controlled highly instrumented truck "hunting" road tests on a 1967-built, 70-ton box car. Thirteen test runs were made at speeds of up to 70 mph over a 20-mile stretch of tangent track which had 132 lb welded rail laid approximately two years before. The tests made it evident that accelerated truck and center plate wear can be attributed to "shimmy" or truck "hunting" which originates from a natural tendency of the truck wheels to oscillate laterally between rails after a critical operating speed is reached.
