Smart Mobility Collection

This research report collection takes a data-driven look at how metropolitan areas can incorporate alternative mobility approaches and explores ways that governments can encourage the use of these alternatives. Topics include smart mobility, ridesharing, bicycle commuting, carsharing, and on-demand ride services. Many of these new approaches are represented by services such as Carma and Zimride (ridesharing), ZipCar and car2go (carsharing) and Uber and Lyft (ridesharing). The collection includes a lengthy research article, plus individual articles on each of the topics under consideration. The authors note that, thus far, consumers have been the primary beneficiaries of new mobility service. The authors turn the focus onto how these expanded “mobility ecosystems” can encourage higher productivity and reduce congestion, as well as bring related benefits by reducing traffic accidents, improving air quality, and reducing parking demand. All of these can be incorporated into public policy goals. The research study uses the case example of Helsinki, Finland, which has the goal of making it unnecessary for any city resident to own a private car by 2025, instead using an on-demand mobility system. Included with the collection is an interactive map of alternative transportation and an interactive table that summarizes the impact of alternative transportation in 171 metropolitan areas. The chart has three categories – ridesharing, bike commuting, and carsharing – and notes each metro area size, annual vehicle miles reduced, and total annual monetary savings (to commuters and to the cities). The interactive map of the United States graphically depicts projected numbers of new ridesharers; users can zoom in to the areas of their interest.
