Dynamic Responses of Different Concrete Specimens under Elastic Impacts
Through numerical spectral analysis and an experimental verification program, this paper studies the dynamic responses of three commonly used specimens (i.e. 150 × 150 × 150 mm cubes, Ф150 × 300 mm cylinders and Ф100 × 100 mm drilled cores) under elastic impacts in an effort to find a more convenient and efficient way to obtain the actual one- and three-dimensional P-wave speeds of concrete by applying impact-echo tests. It is found from the spectral analysis that the apparent P-wave speeds of the cylinder, cube and core are 99.2%, 91.1% and 94.9% of the theoretical one-dimensional P-wave speed of concrete, respectively. The average apparent P-wave speed of the cubes obtained from the experiment is found to be 90.5% of that of the cylinders, which is almost equal to the theoretical value 91.1% obtained from the spectral analysis. It is also found that reasonable impact durations have no influence on the predominant frequencies of the response spectra of the specimens.
