RESEARCH TRAIN FOR RAIL ADHESION
The research train consists of a Laboratory Coach, a Tribometer Vehicle, and a Store Vehicle. The Tribometer Vehicle is a modified and instrumental two-axle vehicle with independent air-operated disk brakes operated from special control equipment. Wheel-to-rail adhesion is measured by the force required to brake a wheelset on the Tribometer Vehicle to a preset deceleration level against the forward motion of the train. The Laboratory Coach has all the recording and data logging equipment. Signals from the various transducers on the Tribometer vehicle are brought into a 24-channel signal conditioning/amplifier unit. Some immediate 'on board' analysis of results can be performed using a Wang series 700 programmable calculator which is on-line to the data logger and an IBM output writer. Other pertinent information (e.g., weather and rail-surface conditions, etc.) can be entered manually.
