Weather, Traffic Accidents, and Climate Change
This report looks at the relationship between weather, travel demand, and traffic accidents. It combines data from the National Household Transportation Survey and police reports and finds that warmer temperatures are associated with an increase in traffic fatalities in part due to an increase in pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists. It is estimated that the changing weather patterns expected with climate change could result in 603 additional fatalities per year with a social cost of $58 billion between 2010-2099.
