THE CHOPPER IN D.C. ELECTRIC TRACTION. CHOPPERS ON THE SNCF
LE HACHEUR EN TRACTION ELECTRIQUE A COURANT CONTINU. LES HACHEURS A LA SNCF
In his first article, the author describes the fundamental principles of the chopper, together with the characteristics of its components and the role of the self capacity fitter, whose importance can be reduced by making use of a circuit of three interlaced choppers. He explains its operation, with the help of diagrams showing the forms and voltages of the current under different tractive and braking conditions (regenerative and rheostatic) as well as the problems posed by low starting voltages. In his second article, he retraces the history of choppers since 1965, up to the introduction of 4,400 kW units assembled for experimental purposes in order to analyse their operation in interlaced groups and at sub-multiple frequencies, provided in order to obtain very low starting voltages.
