Lessons Learned from Case Studies of Successful Research Implementation in Europe and the United States

In preparation for the second in the series of EU–U.S. symposia on transportation research, several case studies illustrating the main factors that play a role in the successful implementation of research were evaluated. This paper presents 13 case studies that illustrate successes—and challenges—in implementing transportation research products, technologies, and practices. Seven of these examples are from countries in the European Union and six are from the United States. Each case was selected to highlight a particular aspect of the implementation process, but these cases also collectively present eight reoccurring themes or lessons learned that apply to both the U.S. and EU programs: stakeholder involvement, resources for implementation, development, early adopters, institutional barriers, governmental leadership, communication, and market readiness,
