DERAILMENTS. CAN MORE OF THEM BE EXPLAINED
Basic curve negotiation mechanics is dealt with. It is shown that these curve-negotiation forces are in no way related to centrifugal force. The forces are present if operating speed is exactly balanced by the super-elevation of the track. The article discusses the wheel and rail loadings developed by diesel locomotives. The data are based on calculations and experiments conducted by Electro-Motive. The information is believed to assist in explaining and preventing some of the derailments which railroads encounter.
