THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ENERGY-SAVING GENERAL-PURPOSE CEMENT

The authors developed an energy-saving cement for the purpose of decrease in the production energy of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). It is widely known that two approaches are generally effective for the purpose. One is to reduce the production energy of clinkers, and the other is to reduce the content of clinker in cement. In this study, they took both approaches and aimed to reduce the production energy, and also to maintain the quality of the cement equivalent to OPC’s. Test clinkers were burnt in an electric furnace and a test kiln respectively. These clinkers were milled and mixed with several admixtures (granulated ground blast furnace slag, fly ash, and limestone powder) to evaluate the cement quality. As a result, both the electric furnace and the test kiln tests revealed that the increase in the C₃A content in clinker is one of the effective options to reduce the burning energy of clinkers. The authors found the possibility to reduce the production energy and to maintain the quality of cement, by increasing in the C₃A content in clinker by 4% and increasing in the admixtures content in cement by 5%. Limestone powder should be added at least 5% as an admixture as well.
