A STUDY OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SYSTEMS FOR AUTOMATICALLY REGULATING THE RPM OF THE MAIN SHIP ENGINE SHAFT
An experimental method has been developed for evaluating the effectiveness of automatic control systems for regulating the shaft rpms of a ships main engine. This method is rapid and simple, and provides reliable estimates (particularly when absence of precise system characteristics preclude calculation). It is based on establishing a fluctuating load by periodically shifting the rudder. The Odessa Advanced Marine Engineering College built a special portable mechanism which automatically controls the rudder shifting during experiments, with the frequency of the shifting varying from 0.2 to 1.0 per second and with amplitudes of 10--15 degrees. The system effectiveness is measured by the ratio of the amplitude of the shaft rpm fluctuations without the regulator to the same quantity with the regulator. The method was used in studying single screw-single rudder, twin screw-single rudder, and twin screw-twin rudder ships. All the measurements may be taken in one hour while the ship is in operation. This method makes it possible to select the specific control system satisfying given requirements, provides the simplest means for analyzing the nonsensitive zone of rpm regulators, and is useful in evaluating foreign ships in which the precise characteristics of the system are not known.
