Ride-sharing piles on the competitive pressure
Already biting into rail's share of the long-distance passenger market, the phenomenon of sharing car trips is rapidly gaining ground in France, and it could soon be coming to other countries. With the advent of ridesharing comes a modern, safer and more convenient version of hitchhiking. Ridesharing also reduces the cost of long-haul trips for car drivers because they accept a monetary contribution from their passengers for trip expenses. The Internet has helped to make the process simple, and the resulting increase in ride-sharing can be seen in the long-distance passenger rail business. Comparisons between ride-sharing and high speed trains are made in this article, with implications for the future.
