Utah's Secret Weapon

While most governments seem to have a difficult time with long-range planning, Utah is proving to be the exception, as this article illustrates. An organization called Envision Utah, which is a statewide enterprise, has emerged over the past 15 years as the preeminent model for regional planning. Although state and most local governments are involved, it is not a government effort; rather, it is a public-private-nonprofit partnership involving many stakeholders, including local public officials, planning professionals, developers, conservationists, business and community leaders, as well as anyone else who is interested in collaborating for a common purpose. Envision Utah's successes are discussed here, including the fact that the state has more transit infrastructure than many larger states, as well future challenges, such as the issue of fracking. Overall, this article takes a look at how the process of the organization works.
