OXIDATION AND DAMAGING OF FOUNDATION BLOCKS IN THE SUPPORT STRUCTURES OF RAILROAD CONTACT LINES

OSSIDAZZIONE E LESIONATURA DEI BLOCCHI DI FONDAZIONE NELLE STRUTTURE DI SOSTEGNO DELLA LINEA DI CONTATTO F.S.

The leakage current from return circuit, through the system pole-foundation block-ground, causes a continuous process of electro-chemical corrosion of the embedded part of the pole, and this only in the case of poles situated in the anodic area of the rail. The documentation produced brings out a clear correlation between the distribution of damaging between two electric sub-stations and the known distribution of the track-ground potential between these. The formation of oxide, producing an increase in the diameter of the pole, causes stresses in the concrete such as to bring about damage. This makes it necessary for existing lines to provide for a gradual renewal of damaged blocks; for newly constructed lines, this difficulty has been overcome by means both of the electrical insulation of the poles and of the modification of the construction of the electric traction return circuit.
