Entry Mode Choices of Rapidly Internationalizing Terminal Operators: The Determinants of the Degree of Control on Foreign Ventures

The growth of international terminal operators (ITOs) is giving momentum to the ongoing process of internalization in ports. Most container port operators experience regular internationalization drives and many firms pursue an unconventional and accelerated foreign expansion process. This study focuses on a new type of ITOs, known as "emerging ITOs". Cultural distance, relational capabilities and market knowledge are valuable predictors of these emerging ITOs' entry mode choice. These emerging ITOs include players from developing countries and financial operators. This article investigates the previous degree of control in foreign ventures and emphasizes the uniqueness of the ITOs path of expansion. The article focuses on the “born-global” perspective and the Linkage-Leverage-Learning model.
