WHY WE NEED A NEW YARD PHILOSOPHY
Transit time reliability is a critical factor in a shipper's determination of the mode he will use. This has been confirmed by various shipper surveys and studies reported on in recent years. A lack of transit time reliability translates into higher shipper/consignee costs, since it means that larger safety stocks and larger order quantities are required. The poor transit time reliability of the U.S. railroad system has often been cited as a major reason for the steady decline in the railroad's share of the total freight movement market. Thus, better understanding of the nature and causes of railroad transit time reliability performance is of critical importance to the industry.
