Impact of the International Environment on the Railway Development in the Republic of Croatia

Utjecaj medunarodnog okruzenja na razvoj zeljeznice u Republici Hrvatskoj

The development of the European space emphasizes the territorial integration links, and territorial strategies that are essential for the creation of smart, sustainable and inclusive Europe projected by strategy Europe 2020. The paper analyses how Croatia fits into the development trends of the European transport system by integration in the European transport corridors with emphasis on rail transport. It points to the creation of favourable conditions for investments from EU funds in the rail sector as a future carrier of traffic load in the European Union. It analyses the traffic position of Croatia in Europe and its integration into macro regional division of the EU from a traffic point of view. Based on this division the appropriate EU strategies have been created. The project Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) provides the development of intermodal transport network of EU members. The goal is to connect the existing network of the European traffic into a single trans-European transport network by eliminating congestions on the European transport routes by improving infrastructure and connectivity of different modes of transport in multimodal transport throughout the EU. The Transport Development Strategy of the Republic of Croatia for the period from 2014 to 2030 also fits into the highlighted trends of the transport development of the EU. It aims to improve the country’s economy and development by establishing intermodal, sustainable, efficient and safe transport system.
