SAFETY IN NUCLEAR SHIPS

Safety precautions taken aboard nuclear-powered merchant vessels are described. The containment systems for the shipboard nuclear power plant are described, and safety standards for these vessels are also briefly given. Insurance for nuclear powered ships is discussed, with reasons for restricted usage of earlier nuclear ships given. The degree of safety measures taken aboard nuclear merchant ships are given, and a description of the construction of the reactor shield and shield materials for the Japanese nuclear ship MUTSU is included.
