ANTICORROSIVE TREATMENT OF SHIP FRESH WATER STORAGE TANKS
A method was developed for treating cement-lined ship fresh-water storage tanks. It consists of treating the cement storage tank walls with carbon dioxide by adding a sufficient quantity of dry ice to the water in the tank and allowing the water to remain in contact with the walls for a 24-hr period. The alkalinity and pH of the stored water were determined as a function of the time and of the amount of dry ice. Treating storage tank walls with a one percent carbon dioxide solution has no deleterious effects on the taste and health quality of the stored water. This treatment has been successfully tested on board several Black Sea ships, viz.: Latviya, Armeniya, and Svanetiya.
