ADVANCED ICEBREAKING CONCEPTS
Recent economic studies have resulted in favorable predictions for extending winter navigation in domestic waterways. The Coast Guard is attempting to meet this challenge by taking a "fresh look" at icebreaking and applying new and innovative concepts to accomplish its task. This paper describes three advanced concepts which have been investigated: materials handling, explosive icebreaker, and the "super efficient" River Ice Breaker (RIB) concept, which has been selected for continued development. The paper concludes with statements about conventional icebreakers and why R&D is now being applied to enhance U.S. icebreaking technology.
