MANOEUVRING TRIALS WITH THE 193,000 TONNE DEADWEIGHT TANKER "ESSO BERNICIA"
Contains the results of a comprehensive series of steering and maneuvering trials which were carried out with the 193,000 dtw tanker "Esso Bernicia" during June 1969. The program of trials included Bech spiral manoeuvres, Kempf manoeuvres, turning circles and stopping trials. During the trials the opportunity was taken to try a new stopping procedure with a view to reducing the head reach and still allow a large degree of control during stopping. This maneuver involved the use of rubbed recycling in conjunction with a progressive reduction in engine power and the procedure evolved proved to be extremely effective in reducing head reach. The ship was found to be course unstable in all conditions except the deep water-ballast condition, but the degree of instability was no more than for other large tankers which are at present in service and operating satisfactorily. In all the conditions tested, the ship was found to be perfectly manageable and no difficulty was experienced in steering a given course.
