DESIGN OF AN EFFECTIVE POLLUTION CONTAINMENT BARRIER FOR THE OPEN SEA

Describes the development and testing of the "Bottom-Tension" Boom. This design uses the towing or mooring forces of the deployed boom to assist in maintaining the boom skirt in a vertical orientation to maximize containment capability. Conceived for use in the open sea environment, this barrier is designed to survive in 20-foot waves, 2-knot currents and 60-knot winds. A 500-foot full-scale section of this boom has been sucessfully tested in the Santa Barbara Channel.
