OPTIMIZATION OF STABLE PLATFORM CHARACTERISTICS
A platform responds as a resonant oscillating system to a forcing term whose amplitude and phase vary with frequency. The variation of force amplitude stems from the variation of phase of the forces on various members of the structure. The possibility is explored of exploiting both the frequency response characteristics and the force amplitude characteristics to design platforms of minimum motion or anchor line forces. Several examples are worked out by the hydrodynamic synthesis procedure from which it is concluded that resonant detuning is more important than force minimization in optimizing the heave motion of a floating platform.
