Mining Rail-transit Use Patterns from Mobile Phone Data: Case Study of Three Communities in Shanghai

Rail-transit system plays an important role in promoting urban development and connecting the suburb to the city center especially in megacities. Understanding the travel activities and rail-transit use patterns of residents along the metro is significant to improve the layout of rail-transit network and adjust the service mode of metro. Traditional household travel survey has defects of low sampling rate, worse timeliness and unable continuous observation. For automatic fare collection data, it cannot analyze the travel activities outside the metro system. Mobile phone data provides an efficient tool to solve these problems, which can collect large- scale travel data on the level of individual. A mobile-phone-based methodology is proposed to analyze the rail-transit use patterns in the context of individual activity. Moreover, 4 measures, the intensity of rail-transit use, the proportion of rail-transit users, the distance between activity point and its nearest metro station and the spatio-temporal distribution of individual activities, are proposed to analyze the difference of rail-transit use in different urban areas and the matching of network layout and service mode to travel activities of residents. Three communities in the different urban areas of Shanghai are studied in this paper. The results show that the rail-transit use in these communities differs greatly, and the existing rail transit system cannot fully satisfy the actual demand of residents in the suburban areas. The proposed method and conclusion in this study can be considered as references for urban transportation planning and public transport policy-making.
