Changes in the Public Transport Network and Their Impact on the Coverage of Municipalities

The paper assesses the development of the public transport network in the Olomouc district, Czech Republic. The analysis focused on the period beginning in 1980 in ten-year intervals, using selected transport characteristics in GIS. The aim is to confirm or refute general assertions and assumptions concerning the development of transport in the last few decades. The network was assessed both on weekdays and at weekends, focusing on individual stops and connections in 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010. Transport is characterized by a decrease in passenger numbers and by limiting public transport only to attractive areas. The conducted analysis showed that coverage of towns and larger villages has certainly been improved. On the other hand, smaller municipalities are characterized by a gradual reduction in transport. The service of transport has the similar development to catchment area of the center in the examined area. The development of coverage is totally different on weekdays and at the weekend. The decrease in the number of lines was offset by the gradual extension of the existing lines. The authors present the fundamental results of their research using tables, charts and maps.
