PC SHAPES FLATBACK'S THIRD GENERATION
Penn Central, last year, working on a base of better than 20 percent of the nation's flatback loadings and coming from two years of declining volume, PC lifted its trailerload volume 23 percent (excluding M&E). So 1972 was more than just a good year; it marked the beginning of an era. That era, in President William Moore's view, is to bring a doubling of trailer volume every three years. PC's new brand of flatback is characterized by innovative marketing, broad managerial talent, and dedication from top management. Nationally, flatback has gone through two stages--a formative one in which horizons as well as talents were limited, and a development stage in which service, rates, equipment and personnel underwent vast change and great improvement, accompanied by tremendous growth. The question follows: will PC's approach become flatback's third generation? It growth is a criterion, the wholesale approach appears inevitable.
