FLATBACK TRAINLOAD RATES: THE NEW DIMENSION

Flatback had a predictable rebound in 1972, up 10.8 percent from 1971 in trailer-loadings. Volume of 2,445,389 was nearly back to 1969's record volume of 2,497,586. And barring any such disaster as the prolonged shutdown of the Penn Central, volume in 1973 will set a new record. With continuing good economic conditions this year, a greater than 10 percent increase seems assured. Trailer volume in the first four weeks of the year set a torrid pace, up 16.6 percent from the year-earlier period as a starter. Virtually every railroad participated in last year's increase. Several major railroads had better than 20 percent gains. But the greatest impact upon the national picture was made by the Penn Central and resulted from an all-out campaign by top management to greatly increase intermodal business.
