HIGH SPEED TESTS WITH THE TURBINE TRAINS
The author, describes the master plan which has governed the graduated trials, carried out in stages, of the turbotrain rolling stock incorporating an aviation-type gas-turbine engine: first ground tests for adaptation to the railway environment; then line tests with standard rolling stock to assess the propulsion system and the bogies; finally testing of the transmission system which culminated in the construction of the ETG series which opens the way for the very high-speed RTG and integral propulsion by turbines. The author gives detailed information on the different trials, how they were conducted, their type, the data collected, the equipment employed and the results obtained; in conclusion he sets out the current and planned linetest programme and refers to the very promising results of this type of graduated exploration, particularly as regards performances and speeds attained.
