Electronic work diaries: overview and benefits
Electronic work diaries (EWDs) have been referred to in heavy vehicle law for over 10 years. However until now there has not been an enabling specification to begin the articulation of their function and technology. Resulting from the Operational Pilot of Electronic Work Diaries and Speed Monitoring Systems, in consultation with stakeholders, Transport Certification Australia (TCA) developed the EWD Functional and Technical Specification (draft). The EWD Functional and Technical Specification (draft) aligns with the nationally established TCA National Telematics Framework which is now also recognised as an ISO standard. The EWD Functional and Technical Specification (draft) offers a performance-based, multi-provider model which promotes flexibility and innovation, and provides choice for Transport Operators. This paper provides an overview of the EWD as defined by the Specification and discusses the features which provide productivity, compliance and safety benefits within an environment that will provide assurance to government, regulators and industry.
