Intelligent Compaction Use Is on the Rise
This article describes intelligent compaction (IC) and its increasing uses in the United States. The author defines IC as an equipment-based technology where a variety of hardware and software systems are installed on a vibratory roller; global positioning systems (GPS) are an important component of IC. The equipment enables the compactor’s operator to monitor the roller passes, mat temperature, and pavement stiffness in real time, thus improving the consistency and effectiveness of the compaction process. The author notes that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Asphalt Institute have been working together to study and implement IC technology since 2007. Readers are referred to intelligentcompaction.com for information about free workshops that are available to agencies upon request.
