DM to IP communications: the way forward

Telecommunications in the Railway industry is undergoing a phase of technological change from the traditional TDM based networks to a more Internet Protocol (IP) based network systems. It is obligatory on the part of the technology champions in the Rail Industry to execute a strategic framework based on the needs, availability and timeframe to seamlessly integrate this change. This paper puts forward the considerations and guidelines to develop such a framework. It starts with discussing IP technology, the need for the change, leading considerations to account for in planning a technological change and proposes a change model. It concludes with explaining the effects and the expectations from the business in regard to this change. This paper is aimed at understanding the IP technology in comparison of the TDM technology. It imparts an understanding for prospective technology champions to develop a framework and a roadmap for the technological change.
