CSR Pandaroo: China’s first heavy haul locomotive for Australia
There is now a third supplier of 4000+ Horse Power AC locomotives to Australia. After years of having locomotives supplied with American based technology dominating the market, we now have a locomotive that is not only demonstrating its performance but also incorporates a number of innovative features that makes it very competitive for Australia’s freight market. The Chinese have now produced their first locomotive manufactured to the rigorous standards demanded in Australia. The Chinese have for a number of years been frustrated with trying to break into a developed countries’ locomotive market and it was not until SCT logistics started exploring the Chinese capabilities that the opportunity arose. SCT has always prided itself on being innovative, it operated Australia’s first private rail freight train introduced innovative concepts like the high cube box vans, continuous fuelling systems and was the first operator in the ARTC network to procure AC locomotives. Another important factor to support SCT’s decision to procure these locomotives was a third party that was also exploring rail opportunities around the world, the German diesel engine supplier MTU Detroit Diesel Australia. MTU were supplying engines to China for the New Zealand narrow gauge locomotives, however following this project MTU considered they needed greater engineering input into future locomotive builds that utilised their product.
