Western Sydney light rail: connecting the people of Western Sydney to the future

Parramatta City Council proposes a Western Sydney Light Rail Network centred on Parramatta and covering the central area of Sydney. The proposed network stretches from Macquarie Park and Strathfield in the east to Rouse Hill in the north, Bankstown and Liverpool in the south and Wetherill Park and Blacktown in the west. For the proposed light rail network, Parramatta is the central hub that links the key activity centres. The proposed network also connects into the rest of the public transport network across Sydney. One of the main reasons for proposing the Western Sydney Light Rail Network is that Parramatta City Council and its partners in the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) and across Western Sydney judge that a major improvement in public transport (including the links in the network, the frequency of service and the capacity to carry passengers) is critical to attracting employment within Western Sydney to improve: - the strength of activity centres - the amenity and liveability of centres - the quality of life of people in Western Sydney - social conditions in an area of relative disadvantage (compared to other parts of Sydney). Another major reason is to accommodate population growth in a more sustainable city form. This paper will discuss the opportunities that the Western Sydney Light Rail Network offers to unlock the potential of Parramatta and the surrounding region, and the key elements of the system which will lead to its long term success as part of the wider Sydney transport network.
