Sustainable roads for Africa fragile states

Better roads are essential to enable the free movement of people and goods, access to markets and access to social services, leading to improved security and economic development. No less so in Africa than anywhere else. However, it is not enough just to construct new roads. We need also to ensure that road projects are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable, delivering roads infrastructure that best serves the needs of local communities. Strengthening the planning capacity of local authorities and safeguarding maintenance and operations are central for long-term sustainable development. The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) delivers over $300m of infrastructure per year, primarily in post-conflict and post-disaster environments. In the last four years UNOPS has delivered over 5,900km of sustainable and quality roads in the most challenging areas of Africa, from emergency access for relief supplies in South Sudan to paved and unpaved road networks stimulating economic growth in DR Congo and Liberia, prioritizing close collaboration with governments to build national capacity. As lead UN agency for infrastructure, procurement and project management, UNOPS is at the forefront of innovation and strategy in development and positioned to serve as a key partner to assist governments with sustainable solutions as they address fragility and build resilience.
