Traffic accidents. How the media influence our perception of risk
Media coverage of traffic accidents mainly follows journalistic criteria and does not aim at portraying reality 1:1. Since at the same time media are the most important source of information for a majority of the population, risk perception is influenced by media distortions. Risk perception then has an influence itself, for example on risk behaviour. The relation of real traffic accidents and media coverage, as well as the criteria that cause such media distortions, were examined in an empirical content analysis of newspaper coverage and statistics in the region of Brunswick. The content analysis is accompanied by an assessment of possible consequences. (A)
