TWO BIG STEPS FOR AMTRAK

National Railroad Passenger Corp. begins replacement of its aging car and locomotive fleet with acquisition of new trains and diesels and with plans for 'next generation' coaches that are to utilize the 'best available' technology. Last month as a pair of sleek French-built turbine trainsets moved west over Penn Central after their arrival in New Jersey, the proud new owner was also taking steps to acquire a fleet of new locomotive-hauled passenger cars. Amtrak asked 13 U.S. manufacturing and industrial design firms for what is termed "the next generation of standard rail passenger cars incorporating the best available transportation technology."
