How to evaluate the excavatability of controlled low-strength materials for trenches: a new approach
Controlled Low Strength Materials (CLSM) are frequently used for backfilling of trenches because they are easy to pour due to their self-compacting behavior. Yet, in many cases, their manual excavatability with a pick has also to be ensured because network owners need to have a rapid access to their installations, for maintenance matters. Unfortunately, usual available classification systems or empirical criteria of excavatability do refer neither to the digging facility power nor to the mix design of the material to be excavated. Thus they are not efficient to estimate accurately this performance. A new method to evaluate the pick-excavatability of CLSM was recently proposed with promising results. The present paper confirms the interest of this new approach and makes a further validation of it through the evaluation of CLSM incorporating recycled concrete aggregates. After reminding the context and the research objectives, the scientific approach is detailed, based on the proposal of a simple laboratory punching test and a field test of mechanical excavation on trenches. Then the experimental campaign is presented and its results analyzed. Finally, a predictive model of excavated volumes developed at IFSTTAR is applied on those results enabling us to validate the approach experimentally.
